The Ouija Board That Changed Everything
A Teenage Psychic Experience

In my early teens, I was like many kids my age – curious, daring, and, admittedly, a bit reckless. Growing up with a mother like Kerry Kulkens, a well-known psychic and White Witch, you’d think I’d have known better than to mess with things I didn’t fully understand. But sometimes, youthful curiosity gets the better of you. That’s precisely what happened one fateful night when my friends and I decided to pull out an Ouija board and host a séance. Little did I know that experience would leave me shaken and seeking protection from energies I wasn’t prepared to deal with.

It all started on a typical Saturday night. A few friends were over, and we were feeling adventurous. Someone had the bright idea to bring out an old Ouija board they found in their attic. At first, it seemed harmless. We laughed and dared each other to ask ridiculous questions like “Who will we marry?” and “Will we be rich?” But soon enough, the atmosphere shifted. The room grew still, and a cold draft seemed to sweep in from nowhere. The playful giggles faded, and the air thickened with something none of us could explain.
At first, the planchette moved slowly, like it didn’t want to cooperate. We thought it was just us pushing it, so we laughed it off. But then, it moved more forcefully, almost on its own. My stomach churned with a strange mix of excitement and fear. We asked the spirit, “Who are you?” Slowly, letter by letter, it spelled out a name none of us recognised. But that wasn’t the frightening part.
Suddenly, the candles we had lit flickered violently. A cold sensation swept through the room, wrapping around us like an invisible fog. One of my friends said they felt a hand brush their shoulder, but no one was near her. The hair on the back of my neck stood on end. We were all frozen, unsure of what to do. My heart raced as I watched the planchette spin in circles before pointing to the word “Goodbye” alone.

We were scared, but we still didn’t take it seriously. We brushed it off, thinking it was just our imagination running wild. However, when I tried to sleep that night, I couldn't shake the eerie feeling that something was watching me. I kept hearing faint whispers, though I couldn’t make out any words. My dreams were filled with dark figures, and I woke up in a cold sweat multiple times.
The following day, things escalated. Objects in my room shifted on their own. My bedside lamp flickered, even though the bulb was new. I felt a presence in my room that lingered in the shadows and watched me silently. It was unsettling. My usually calm and collected teenage self was starting to feel the weight of something darker.
That’s when I knew I had to tell my mum, Kerry Kulkens. Although embarrassed, I explained everything that had happened—the séance, the Ouija board, and the strange occurrences afterwards. In her usual calm and wise manner, my mother listened carefully, her face showing no surprise. After all, she had decades of experience dealing with the unseen forces surrounding us.

“You’ve invited something in,” she said plainly, her voice steady. “Spirits can be playful, but not all are friendly. When we use things like Ouija boards or conduct séances, we open a door and don’t always know what’s on the other side.”
My heart sank. “What should I do?” I asked, feeling a little helpless.
My mother reassured me there was no need to panic, but I needed to act quickly to protect myself. She gave me a simple spell to cast, one she had used countless times to shield herself from negative energies.
That afternoon, we prepared together. Mum handed me a white candle, symbolising protection and purity. She also gave me a small pouch filled with salt, lavender, and sandalwood, explaining that these ingredients would help cleanse the space and drive away any lingering negativity.

The final piece was a small amethyst crystal, which she said would help guard my energy moving forward.
We sat in my room, and Mum guided me through the protection spell. First, I sprinkled the salt around the perimeter of my room, creating a protective barrier. I then lit the white candle and held the amethyst crystal in my hand, closing my eyes and focusing on filling the room with pure, protective energy. Mum instructed me to repeat the following incantation:
"By the light of this flame, I cleanse this space,
Only good shall remain, negativity erased."
"With this salt, lavender, and crystal in hand,
Protected I stand; in the light I command."
As I spoke, I imagined the fear and darkness that had clung to me, lifting away, replaced by a sense of calm and safety. The air around me seemed to lighten, and the feeling of being watched disappeared.
After the spell, my mother reminded me always to be careful when dealing with unseen forces. “Curiosity is good,” she said, “but it’s important to respect the boundaries of the spirit world. Always protect yourself, and never take these things lightly.”
From that day forward, I’ve been much more cautious about engaging with the unknown. I still deeply respect the Ouija board, but I understand now that it’s not a game. The experience, though frightening at the time, taught me a valuable lesson about the power of the energies we invite into our lives. Thankfully, with my mother’s guidance and a little spellwork, I could regain control and find peace again.
