February Love Magic:
The Quirky Origins of Saint Valentine’s Day and Spells for Your Heart's Desires

Saint Valentine’s Day, the most whimsical of love holidays, has roots as twisted as a romance novel plot. It all began in merry England and Scotland, where on February 14th, bachelors and maids alike were assigned a “Valentine” for the year by a lottery of love. It was, let’s say, a temporary engagement—a playful, low-stakes betrothal with a promise to exchange little presents (and probably a lot of gossip).
Even married folks got involved, much to their spouses' amusement (and perhaps suspicion). According to writers like Chaucer and Shakespeare, this was the day the birds started choosing their mates, so humans thought they might as well join in!

From Saint to Cupid, and Back Again
The origins of Valentine’s Day only get wilder. Long before we had cards decorated with red hearts, cupids, and "Be Mine" scrawled in curly script, there was the Roman festival of
Lupercalia, held in honour of Pan and Juno. Men would draw the names of women from a box, matching by fate rather than fancy, which turned into, let’s say, an exciting celebration.
Christian leaders, keen on taming these spirited festivals, tried to replace the romantic lottery with the names of saints instead. But let’s face it, that didn’t go quite as planned. Soon, the ‘saints’ names became part of love notes, and, eventually, the tradition of sending Valentines flourished, a little more romantic—and perhaps a tad more respectable—than the Roman original.
The Chicago post office once opposed tacky Valentines, rejecting some 25,000 "coarse" cards as unfit for the mail. England also measured postal madness by reporting how many absurdly sentimental cards overloaded the system each February 14th. It was a day of love indeed, but one that made postmen sigh under the weight of it all.

St. Valentine’s Love Spells for February
Now, onto the fun part! If you’re feeling the magic of the season, here are a few enchanting Valentine’s Day spells to help usher love your way or add a spark to the one you already have. And who knows? These might just have you casting a spell of romance by day’s end.
The Dream Lover Spell
To dream of your future partner, sprinkle two bay leaves with rose water and place them under your pillow before bed on the eve of February 14th. Close your eyes and say, “Valentine’s dream, bring love to me; show me the face my heart seeks.” Who knows? You may just glimpse your soulmate!
Egg Divination Under the Moon
Crack an egg into a water bowl on Valentine’s Eve and let it sit beneath the moonlight. In the morning, the shape of the egg white will hint at your future love’s occupation—curly, cloud-like for someone dreamy, a distinct shape like a pen for a writer or artist. It’s ancient, odd, and altogether magical!
Spin the Knife of Love
Place a knife on the table and give it a good spin. If the blade stops pointing towards you, your future love will have dark hair; if it points away, expect a fair-haired admirer. Be careful with this one—there’s no faster way to kill the romance than an accidental cut!
Catch-a-Leaf Romance Charm
If you catch a leaf before it hits the ground on Valentine’s Day, you’re in for a year of romantic encounters and excitement. Try catching those love-filled leaves and feel the heart-racing magic as you see your luck.

Whether you aim to glimpse your future love or add a spark of passion to your life, these Valentine’s spells are light-hearted and perfect for the season. So gather your bay leaves, eggs, and a good sense of humour, and embrace the quirky magic of February. Love is in the air, and a little enchantment can’t hurt!
